BuddyPress Widgets: “Recently Active Members” and “Exploded Groups”

January 12th, 2009 in BuddyPress Widgets, buddypress by IQcuties

iQcuties members, every once in a while there will be a technical post on the topic of BuddyPress.  You’re free to read them, of course, but they’re gearded more towards the BuddyPress community.  (You can write a post that alienates me if that will make you feel any better.)

I recently developed two BuddyPress widgets:  “Recently Active Members” and “Exploded Groups”.  Download them here:

http://iqcuties.com/download/widgets.zip

At the moment these widgets are hacks.  They are not separate plug-ins.  To install them you need to replace these two BuddyPress files with the files you just downloaded:

  • bp-core/bp-core-widgets.php
  • bp-groups/bp-groups-widgets.php

Again, these are hacks.  If you update your BuddyPress installation and these new files get written over, then you will lose the functionality.  Then again, I hope that the next release of BuddyPress contains these widgets as options.  Descriptions of the widgets:

Recently Active” is based on “Who’s online” except that it shows recently active members. If your site doesn’t have thousands of users then the “Who’s online” widget can be a little… lonely. “Recently Active” essentially serves the same function as “Who’s online”, but a little more filled out. Plus, who needs a “Who’s online” widget if there’s no chatting functionality?

Exploded Groups” removes the ajax “popular|active|newest” links for the group widget and simply shows three different group displays, one for each: popular, active and newest. I found that, though the ajax links are cool as hell, a lot of people weren’t noticing them. This makes things more out-in-the-open.

Monday News: It begins

January 12th, 2009 in Uncategorized by IQcuties

This site is now a week old and it’s time for some regular features.  Starting today, every Monday there will be a post on iQcuties news.  This will highlight excellent blogs, interesting forum threads, energetic members and promising new groups.

Though the whole site is new, there’s already been some great developments.  Briton Westerhaus started the group “Daily Discussion“.  He’s done a great job so far posting thought-provoking forum topics.  We highly recommend you check it out.  Science, formed by Kenneth Udut, has now become the most popular group.  Great work, Kenneth and Briton!

I’ve been really happy with the blogs people have come up with.  Christina came strong out of the gate with her blog “Adventures of a Single Girl in Dallas“.  She writes about things to which a lot of us will be able to relate and she does it with a great, whimsical style.  XE posted a seemingly gibberish IQ test.  See if your brain is up to th3 383n3ne&&&b3Ben, in Thought Racer, wins the prize for most comments for a post when he asked members for advice on good TV shows.

The best feature of iQcuties is, hands down, the members.  The contributions that everyone has made so far are very encouraging and I’ve loved reading about your thoughts and various perspectives.  If there’s one thing I’d ask of you, it’s to help us get more of you — tell your friends to take the test!  Birds of a feather, as the saying goes, tend to have smart friends.  Also, be friendly.  If someone starts an interesting forum topic or writes a nice blog post, send them a compliment.  If restrained, pattering applause is like gold to a golfer, imagine what a “great post!” comment will do for an iQcutie.

‘Till next Monday,

(Admin)

Apologies for the inconvenience.  We’ve been working on some interesting features and, well, sometimes you have to break some eggs before you can make your meal that consits of broken eggs.

Member Directory Problems

Sorry for the inconvenience, but the member directory is temporarily without function.  This will be corrected as soon as possible.

FREE Blogs are now enabled

January 3rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by IQcuties

Blogs are on… so on.  Try making one of your own:  Go under the “My Account” menu and go to the “Blogs” menu item.  There you should see a “Create Blog” option.  A fun thing to do with your new blog is to switch themes to something that fits your personality.

10 Reasons BuddyPress is the BEST social network platform

December 30th, 2008 in Uncategorized by IQcuties

1) It is built on WordPressMU. With BuddyPress you get to have an awesome social network site where each user can have their own blog (hell, several blogs!) powered by the best blogging platform in the world.

2) The interface is phenomenal. Let’s face it:  people judge a site’s quality by its interface.  BuddyPress not only looks great, but using it is smooth.  And I mean smooth in the Barry White sense.  From the sign-up process to the intuitive layout, your users will be seduced as if by a warm glass of Courvoisier.

3) It is easy to set-up. This one is relative.  I wouldn’t ask my mom to setup a WPMU site, but your average webmaster who isn’t afraid of R-ingTFM should have no problem.

4) It is free. This strongly contributes to the next reason which is…

5) BuddyPress is going to be hugely popular. Trust me on this.  The BuddyPress test site already has well over 2000 members and the 1.0 code has been out only since mid-December.  With popularity comes really good things with it like code stability, active support forums, custom themes and whatnot.

6) It is easily customizable. From the get-go this thing has been designed to be modular.  Don’t want a feature?  Disable that plug-in.  Want to try a new look?  Switch themes.  Even the CSS for the default site design is made to be extensible so that all you have to do is add your own separate CSS file (this way updates don’t break the code you wrote).

7) Features are well thought out. Everything works just the way you’d expect it to work.  You can tell that functionality and features are inspired by the best bits of the social networks that are out there.  Those sites have also provided strong lessons for what not to do (I’m looking at you, MySpace!)

8 ) Managment is a breeze.  Creating blogs; creating groups; deleting objectionable content; group emailing… it’s all there.

9) Spam is not a problem. It’s been solved by these three sylables:  Akismet.  Another great bonus for being built on WPMU is you can extend BuddyPress with the rich variety of WordPress plug-ins available.  This includes Akismet, the best spam killer in the business.  (It’s free unless your blog gets very popular or you start making money from the blog; then you should do the right thing an pay for the peace of mind Akismet brings.)

10) it is being actively developed by very skilled people. I listened to an interview of Andy Peatling, lead BuddyPress deveolper and he sounded on point.  Plus, if you spend any time on the BuddyPress test site (which, apparently, the interviewers only did during the interview - way to be prepared), forum, or Trac, you can tell that input/suggestions/criticisms are heeded.

All in all BuddyPress 1.0 is a lot like the first iPhone.  There are still some obvious features to come, but what is there is done so well you can tell that the whole game has changed.

Online Dating vs. Social Networking

December 21st, 2008 in Uncategorized by IQcuties

As you may know, iQcuties was originally conceived as an online dating site for people with high IQs. For about two years only a rudimentary IQ test while open source software caught up with what users demand from an online user experience. During that time, the public, it appears, is falling out of love with online dating and finding the benefits of the more general theme of online social networking. Look at this graph from Google Trends on the performance of the top dating sites over the past year:

The top site, Match.com, has lost about half of its users over the past year. The writing is on the wall for online dating. People don’t want to be pigeonholed as to what they want. When the BuddyPress extension to WordPressMU was developed (both are great open source projects), I saw that the fate of iQcuties was to become a social networking site.

And doesn’t that make more sense? If you write a blog post or start a discussion thread in a forum, you can be assured that the responses you get will be above the usual YouTube drivel. With that, I present to you the new iQcuties. I hope you enjoy it.
